Handmade Baby Projects Tutorials
Looking for a gift to sew for a baby shower? We have you covered with this collection of ideas!
Sewing your own baby gifts creates opportunities for personalization that you just can’t buy! You can consider your recipient’s nursery colours, the baby’s name, or even motifs that are meaningful to the parents. Plus, what better way to honour a loved one than with time spent carefully crafting a special personal gift?
One common shower gift is a baby quilt. There are many baby-quilt patterns out there, and patterns that can be adapted to baby quilts, but you would need to devote several hours to piecing, quilting and finishing your gift.
But what if you only have a couple of hours to spare? We have some tutorials right here at TrendTex to help you produce the perfect baby gift on a deadline.
First, how about a burp cloth? New parents go through a ton of these, using them to protect clothing and also wipe baby’s face. Our version uses flannel, which is soft on skin and made from multiple layers for absorbency. Plus, there are lots of great prints available in flannel. You could also embroider a monogram onto yours if you wish! This project takes around a half-hour to sew, and uses half a metre of fabric, so you could make a few and bundle them together.
If you’re handy with knit fabrics, you could pick up a pattern for a sleepsuit or bodysuit, but most new parents probably already have lots of clothing for their new arrival. Consider instead a pair of no-scratch mittens – the parents may not have considered that these could be useful!
Babies grow fast, and fingernails are no exception. These little mittens create a thin, breathable barrier that keeps little ones from scratching their delicate skin. You only need a small scrap of jersey knit fabric and around half an hour or so to make these. If you already make clothing, chances are you have some scraps that can work! You could even repurpose used clothing, like t-shirts.
Cloth diapering is making a resurgence, and yes, there are cloth diaper sewing patterns out there, too! If you know the parents-to-be want to cloth-diaper, you could make them cloth wipes.to add to their reusable resources Because ours are made with flannel, they’re super soft and easy to throw in the washing machine. Plus, they cling together, so you can put them inside a wipe box and they will pull out one by one one through the top, just like paper tissues. To use, they can be soaked or sprayed with a simple baby soap and water solution.
Lastly, another easy gift idea – using ribbon scraps – is a taggie blanket. This small square toy offers different textures for baby to enjoy, and a secret ingredient inside makes it crinkle, too. You could add a wooden ring for teething if you wish, and of course the toy can be customized with fun flannel and embellished with a name.
