TIP TIME: Three tips for using fusible web

Fusible web is a product used to attach two pieces of fabric together when heated with an iron. There are several products on the market for your fusible applique projects, but these tips are universal.
- Choose the right product
Before you buy the first fusible web product you find, consider the project you are making. For example products like Misty Fuse and Wonder Under are lightweight and will give your finished project a softer hand. Steam-a-Seam or Pellon EZ-Steam has a grid printed on it to help draw your shapes and it is slightly tacky, so you can remove the paper to temporarily position on your background fabric before you fuse it in place. This is helpful if layering several pieces. There are other products with features that may be helpful, from heavy duty types that require no sewing, to ones that come as printable sheets.
- Cut roughly first
Once your shapes are drawn out, don’t cut right on the line. Cut roughly around your drawn shapes and then fuse your web to the applique fabric. Cut out along the line once fused. This ensures the glue covers your shape entirely and prevents small pieces from moving under your iron and potentially resulting in needing to clean your iron plate.
- Fuse from both sides
When you have fused the applique piece to the background from the front, flip it over and press from the back. This helps apply heat thoroughly for a secure bond.
