Make scrunchies to match any outfit! This project is simple enough to make with kids, too. This project is great for using up scraps, especially leftover jelly roll strips.

The fabric used in our scrunchies, pictured here, is Birthday by Sarah Watts for Ruby Star Society.

Seam allowances are ¼” unless otherwise stated.

Finished Size: 4 ½”
Difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 15 minutes

Here’s what you’ll need per scrunchie:

• Sewing machine
• Cutting tools: rotary cutter, mat and ruler
• 2 half jelly roll strips or fabric scraps at least 2 ½” x 18″
• 6″ of ¼” wide elastic
• General sewing notions: iron, pins, scissors, etc

Cut two strips of fabric 2 ½” wide and 18″ long. Sew together along the longest edge. Press the seam open.

Sew one end of the elastic to the wrong side with a ⅛” seam allowance, centring it over the seam and backstitching over it again to secure.

Repeat on the other end of the fabric, so now you have a loop.

Sew the strips together on the long open edge, leaving an inch or two unsewn at the start and end. Backstitch to secure the thread.

Turn the tube right side out. This will move the elastic to the inside.

Ensuring the fabric is not twisted and seams match, sew the short ends right sides together to create the scrunchie donut shape.

Starting at the seam and turning the raw edges under, top-stitch ⅛” from the edge all the way around, closing the opening and adding a decorative stitched edge at the same time. If you prefer to forgo the topstitching, you can sew the opening closed by hand.

You’re done your new cute two-toned scrunchies! Wasn’t that easy?
