Baby Tutorial: How to Make a Baby Burp Cloth
Get prepped for your next baby shower with this adorable flannel burp cloth. Make this easy burp cloth with just flannel and thread. It has twice the absorbency in the centre, with four layers of flannel.
Finished Size: 17 ½” x 12″
Difficulty: Easy
Time to make: 30 mins
Seam allowances are ¼” unless otherwise stated. Prewash your flannel fabrics before you get sewing. This way, you’ll prevent shrinkage after gifting!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Sewing machine
- Half a metre of flannel fabric
- Quilting ruler, mat and rotary cutter
- Washi/paper tape, or an erasable fabric marker
Cut your flannel down so it measures 18″ x 36″. Fold the long edges to the wrong side by ⅜” and sew.
Place the fabric right-side down and fold the wrong sides together. Fold the left side toward the centre 6″ wide, and the right side 9″ wide.
Place your ruler three inches from the right side of the burp cloth. Fold the left side over again, so that the fold meets the ruler. Press well.
Topstitch the folded piece near to the edge, backstitching at the beginning and end.
Measure 3″ from the other side of the cloth and mark with washi tape or a fabric marker. Sew along the inside edge of the tape, backstitching as before. Remove the tape.
Finally, sew the top and bottom edges closed with top stitching ⅛” from the top edge (which will also be ¼” from the previous line of stitching).
