Tip Time: Block Fusing
This easy block fusing tip can help you save time on your next project. Rather than cutting out shapes from both fabric and interfacing, you’ll only need to cut once. This technique also works well for fusible web for applique too!
First, apply interfacing to the reverse of the fabric. You’ll need a bit more interfacing than the finished shapes you intend to cut, but the fabric should be slightly bigger than the interfacing so that you don’t get your ironing station sticky.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to make sure the interfacing is well adhered. Start by pressing with your iron rather than moving it back and forth. To prevent stretching, you want to place your iron all over the surface instead of smoothing it over with sweeping movements. Pressing from the other side will also help it adhere well. This will help fabrics that can withstand reasonable heat, such as quilting cottons.
Next, trace your shapes onto the interfacing and then cut them out.
Using this block-fusing method means that you only have to cut out once: the fabric and interfacing are cut together in one go.
